A wheel can look perfectly presentable one month, then develop milky patches, bubbling lacquer or dark marks around the rim the next. So, what causes alloy wheel corrosion? Usually, it is not one dramatic event. It is a combination of moisture, road salt, brake dust and damage that lets contaminants get beneath the wheel’s protective coating.
For drivers across Suffolk and Norfolk, wet roads, winter gritting and everyday kerbside parking can all speed up the process. The good news is that corrosion can often be stopped, repaired and prevented from returning - provided the damage is dealt with properly rather than covered up.
What causes alloy wheel corrosion?
Alloy wheels are generally made from aluminium alloys. Aluminium does not rust in the same way as steel, but it can still oxidise and corrode when it is exposed to water, salt and air. Wheels are protected by paint, powder coating, lacquer or a machined diamond-cut finish with clear lacquer over the top.
Once that protective barrier is chipped, scratched, worn thin or starts lifting, moisture can creep in. Corrosion then spreads below the surface, pushing the coating away from the metal. This is why a small stone chip or kerb mark can eventually turn into a much larger patch of flaking finish.
1. Road salt and winter grit
Road salt is one of the biggest causes of alloy wheel corrosion in the UK. It lowers the freezing point of water and helps keep roads safer in cold weather, but it is highly corrosive when it sits on wheels. Saltwater reaches the inner barrel, spokes, rim edge and areas behind the wheel that may not get cleaned during a quick wash.

Bubbling paint, white powdery marks, cloudy lacquer and flaking areas are all signs that moisture has got below the coating.
On diamond-cut wheels, pay attention to small dark lines beneath the clear lacquer or pale patches that do not wash away. On painted or powder-coated wheels, corrosion often appears as raised blisters before the coating starts to peel.
