But the answer depends on the crack’s location, the wheel’s condition and the quality of the inspection before any welding begins.

When can an alloy wheel be welded?

Alloy wheel welding is commonly used to repair a crack caused by pothole impacts, kerb strikes or fatigue around the inner barrel. A clean, localised crack in a repairable area can often be professionally welded, reshaped and tested before the wheel is refinished.

The tyre is removed so the full barrel can be checked inside and out. This matters because the visible crack is not always the full extent of the damage. A technician examines the area for secondary fractures, flat spots, corrosion and signs of an older repair.

The wheel is then checked for buckles and run-out. If an impact has caused both a crack and a bend, welding alone will not restore the wheel properly. Straightening may be required before or after the weld, depending on the damage and the repair plan.

2. Cleaning back to sound metal

Paint, powder coat, lacquer, dirt and oxidised metal are removed from around the crack. Welding over contamination is a shortcut that can leave porosity or a weak, untidy repair. The damaged area needs clean, bare alloy so the technician can see exactly where the crack starts and ends.

The crack is usually prepared to create a suitable weld groove. This gives the weld material proper penetration rather than merely covering the surface. It is careful work: removing too little can leave the fault underneath, while removing too much takes away unnecessary material.

If the wheel is buckled, it can be straightened using specialist hydraulic equipment and measured again. The aim is for the wheel to run true, hold its tyre correctly and balance properly. A welded wheel that still vibrates at speed is not a finished repair.

5. Leak testing and final checks

Before the cosmetic work begins, the repair needs testing. The wheel is checked for air leaks, then inspected for run-out and general condition. Once the tyre is refitted, a final balance confirms the wheel is ready to return to service.

This testing stage is where a proper repair proves its value. Fresh paint can hide poor workmanship for a while. It cannot stop a leak or cure a wheel that has been left out of shape.

Powder coating is a durable option for many wheels and gives an even, hard-wearing finish. Diamond cutting can restore the bright machined face found on many modern alloys, although it must be done with care because every cut removes a small amount of material. If corrosion is widespread or the wheel has already been cut several times, a full painted finish may be the more sensible long-term choice.

The best option depends on how you use the vehicle. A daily driver that sees winter roads may benefit from a durable painted or powder-coated finish. A cherished performance car may suit diamond-cut detailing, provided the underlying wheel condition supports it.

Signs you should book an inspection

A crack is not always obvious. Slow tyre-pressure loss is one of the most common warning signs, especially when the tyre has been checked and no puncture is found. You may also notice vibration through the steering wheel, a repeated need to top up one tyre, a visible line on the inner rim, or damage after a heavy pothole strike.

Do not assume tyre sealant is a fix. It may temporarily mask a small leak, but it does not repair cracked metal. It can also make later inspection and tyre work messier. If a wheel is losing pressure, have it assessed before a minor crack develops into a more expensive problem.

Replacing an alloy wheel can be costly, especially for premium, rare or factory-finished designs. Professional welding can often save a repairable wheel and preserve a matching set, avoiding the compromise of fitting one non-matching replacement.
