One hard impact can put a slight bend in an alloy, and that is often enough to affect tyre sealing, steering feel and ride quality. Wheel straightening restores the rim’s shape where it has been distorted by impact damage. It is not a cosmetic touch-up. When the damage is suitable for repair, it is a practical way to protect how your vehicle drives while saving the cost of replacing an otherwise good wheel.

Steering wheel vibration at speed
A vibration through the steering wheel is one of the most common warning signs, particularly when it starts or becomes noticeably worse at motorway speeds. It may feel like a light shudder through the wheel, or a more persistent shake that makes the car less comfortable to drive.
Wheel balancing can cause similar symptoms, so a vibration does not automatically mean the alloy is bent. However, if the wheel has been balanced and the issue returns, or weights have repeatedly been added without curing it, the rim should be inspected for a buckle. A distorted wheel can prevent the tyre from rotating true, making a perfect balance difficult to achieve.
If the vibration is felt more through the seat or floor than the steering wheel, the issue may be at the rear. Either way, it is worth checking promptly rather than accepting it as part of driving an older car.
A tyre that keeps losing pressure
Tyres lose a small amount of air over time, but needing to top one up every few days or weeks is not normal. If there is no obvious puncture, damage around the rim edge may be allowing air to escape where the tyre seals against the alloy.

The outside face can show the impact, but the inner rim deserves just as much attention. Many alloy bends occur on the inside edge, where they are hidden from view but still affect the tyre seal and wheel rotation.

The key is timing. If the problem began immediately after a heavy pothole strike or kerb impact, the wheels should be high on the inspection list. A tyre can absorb part of the shock, but the alloy often takes the final force.
Avoid putting off the check because the vehicle still seems driveable. Small changes in handling are easy to get used to, but they can mean the tyre is no longer making consistent contact with the road.
Uneven or unusually fast tyre wear
Tyres should wear steadily across the tread when inflation, alignment and suspension are in good order. If one tyre is wearing more quickly than the others, or the wear is uneven despite correct pressures, investigate the cause.
A buckled wheel can contribute to irregular wear by allowing the tyre to run out of true. It is not always the sole cause - wheel alignment and suspension condition matter too - but continuing to fit new tyres to a damaged rim risks wasting money. Inspect and repair the wheel first, then have the vehicle checked and aligned if needed.
This matters even more with low-profile tyres. They can improve looks and steering response, but there is less sidewall to cushion an impact. That means the alloy is more exposed to pothole damage, even when the tyre does not look obviously flat or damaged.
Repeated balancing problems
If a garage tells you a wheel needs an unusual number of balancing weights, or one wheel repeatedly falls out of balance, ask whether the alloy has been checked for run-out. Run-out is the amount a wheel moves from side to side or up and down as it rotates. Too much movement can indicate a bend.
Balancing corrects the distribution of weight around the wheel and tyre assembly. It cannot reshape a distorted rim. Treating a bent alloy with balancing alone may improve the symptom temporarily, but it will not address the underlying problem.
What causes an alloy wheel to bend?
